Many studies have been done over the years to shown the effect of diabetes on cognition. But no study has so far done on the relation between duration of diabetes and cognition. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between duration of diabetes and cognitive performance in type II diabetes mellitus patients.
A purposive sample of 90 subjects was taken aged between 45–65 years. The subjects were then divided into three groups depending upon the duration of diabetes i.e. Group A (< 10 yrs), Group B (11–15 yrs) & Group C (>16 yrs). Each subject underwent cognitive tests to assess their cognitive performance.
Difference between means among groups was compared by ONE WAY ANOVA There was no significant difference found in Finger tapping test, Trail Making Test, Clock Draw Test, Delayed Verbal Recall and Category Fluency Test when compared in all three groups.
The results of this study suggest that duration of diabetes does not affect the cognitive ability provided the diabetes is under control.
