Urinary incontinence (UI) is highly prevalent among pregnant women. This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of urinary incontinence among patients attending obstetrics and gynecology.
This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence among patients attending obstetrics and gynecology clinics in Kano state.
This was a cross-sectional research design where three thousand three hundred and fifteen (3315) pregnant women receiving routine antenatal care at Five (5) different Hospitals in Kano state where studied. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics
The overall prevalence of UI found to be 10.2% in the study population. Stress urinary incontinence was the most common type accounting for 62.4%. The majority of the expectant mothers (35.8%) reported leaking every day and/or night.
Based on this study, pregnant women experiences urinary incontinence. Awareness needs to be created among the pregnant women (antenatal clients) and health providers on how to recognize symptoms and manage them.
