Effect of the Mckenzie's Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy and Pain Releasing Phenomenon in Subjects with Dequervain's Tenosynovitis

Abstract

De Quervain's tenosynovitis refers to tenosynovitis of the first wrist extensor compartment involving the synovial sheaths of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis. It is a common cause of wrist pain which may be quite disabling. In this study effort is taken to find optimal physiotherapy intervention for De Quervain's tenosynovitis.

60 Subjects clinically diagnosed with dequervain's tenosynovitis participated for study. 8 of them did not come for the follow up. Remaining 52 subjects were screened for VAS, ROM and PRWE scores and were put in either of the four groups. Conventional treatment was the baseline treatment for all the four groups which includes ultrasound and cryotherapy. Group A received only Conventional treatment, Group B received Mckenzie's Method of MDT exercises, Group C received PRP, Group D received MDT and PRP. Interventions were carried out for a period of 3 weeks (3 times/week). After 3 weeks the subjects were reassessed. The post treatment improvement was noted with the outcome measures.

The results showed statistically extremely significant improvement in Group D in all the outcome measures as compared to other 3 groups. Group B and C showed better results than Group A.

We found that combination therapy(MDT+PRP+Conventional therapy)has maximal effect in subjects with dequervain's tenosynovitis.
