Abstract

With increasing incidences of stroke, there is a necessity to understand functional recovery of patients with types of strokes (hemorrhagic and infarct). We evaluated the functional gain of stroke patients admitted in Medanta Hospital, depending on functional independence measure (FIM) scores.

A total of 131 acute stroke patients were included in the study among which 51 patients diagnosed with hemorrhagic stroke and 80 patients were diagnosed with ischemic stroke. Both groups were assessed on baseline FIM score at the time of admission (AFIM) and they underwent inpatient rehabilitation along with medical management. All patients were reassessed at the time of discharge (DFIM).

When we compared AFIM and DFIM in both groups, it revealed that there is significant difference in both groups (p<0.05). Between group analysis revealed similar improvement in both groups.

Substantiate improvement of mean FIM scores occurs after inpatient rehabilitation. With this study, we conclude that there is statistically significant improvement in both groups with respect to Functional Independence Measure.
