Balance is dynamic and requires constant adjustments to adapt to external perturbations, through the use of vision, muscle activity, articular positioning and proprioception, and the vestibular system, all acting in concert. Identifying factors that influence balance can help improve the accuracy of diagnosis and quality of treatment and rehabilitation and is fundamental for preventing falls and incapacities. The aim of the present study was to find if an association exists between BMI, trunk muscle power and dynamic balance in young adults.
In this observational study 320 apparently healthy young adults were recruited and their body mass index, trunk muscle (trunk flexors, extensors, right and left lateral rotators) power and multidirectional functional reach test (MDRT) scores were measured. Correlation between the variables was assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and Spearman's rho tests.
It was found that the BMI and trunk muscle power were not correlated with the MDRT in any direction. There was no relationship between obesity, trunk muscle power and dynamic balance in young adults.
