Osteoarthritis of the knee is common, affecting almost a 10th of the population aged over 55. This proportion is likely to increase with extended longevity and a bigger body mass index. Total joint replacements are important surgical interventions for treating severe arthritis of weight-bearing joints. Systematic reviews had been shown that all form of primary knee replacement results in large improvements in patient related outcome measures for majority of those undergoing these procedures.
The goals of this study were to assess the trend in rate of total knee replacement in Karachi.
The study was conducted to design a questionnaire. The data was collected from hospital records, by surgeon's, by patients. Total hundred patients were included in this research.
In hundreds patients of Total knee replacement, 89% patients have the diagnosis of osteoarthritis of knee.
More females such as 66% were affected than males such as 23%.
Most of patients had bilateral total knee replacement which is 59%
Than unilateral such as 30%
The prevalence of osteoarthritis is high in total knee replacement patients. Osteoarthritis of knee is the most common musculoskeletal disorder in our country. It should be necessary to manage osteoarthritis in early stages by conservative treatment in which physiotherapy plays an important role but if the condition is too severe the total knee replacement is an effective treatment.
