Prevalence of Musculoskeletal disorders among Tram Pilots/Drivers of Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC), India

Abstract

Musculoskeletal pain is common among drivers and in tram pilots/drivers of Calcutta Tramways Company Ltd., West Bengal, India. Long term confined postures, whole-body vibrations, long working hours, awkward/incorrect posture and exposure to vibration put the tram pilots at risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

To assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal problems among tram pilots of Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC), West Bengal, India and to identify the job related risk factors among tram pilots/drivers.

This cross-sectional study surveyed 82 Tram pilots selected by convenience sampling aged between 20 years and 60 years.

Socio demographic details of all the tram pilots were collected, Nordic Musculoskeletal disorder questionnaire was used to find out work related musculoskeletal problems/injuries in the last 12 months and 7 days. Perceived job related risk factors are also identified by using a self developed questionnaire.

The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was high among Tram pilots and the most common site during the last 12 months and the last 7 days was the neck(43%), shoulder (45%), wrist and hand (39%) and lower back(58%). Increase in age and duration of employment, duration of work hours, standing posture were identified to be the most common risk factors associated with work related musculoskeletal disorders(WRMSDs).
