To compare the closed kinetic chain exercises and open kinetic chain exercises on gait velocity, cadence, stride length and strength of knee flexors and extensors in chronic stroke patients
Thirty stroke patients were taken and divided into two groups, experimental group receiving open kinetic chain exercises and conventional group receiving closed kinetic chain exercises. Results were measured with Isokinetic analyser for strength of knee flexors and extensors and also gait parameters like cadence, gait velocity and stride length were measured.
After six weeks of treatment period, the subjects in group 1 who were given closed kinetic chain exercises were compared to the group 2 subjects who were given open kinetic chain exercises. Paired t-test has been carried out to observe the treatment impact between the groups before and after the treatment. Results shown that there is no significant change in the comparison of the two studies. There is improvement in the pre and post study outcome measures significantly at 0.05 levels.
Closed kinetic chain exercises and open kinetic chain exercises were shown a positive effect on strength and cadence, gait velocity and stride length in individuals with chronic stroke. Hence, both can be implemented in the treatment protocol depending on the patient's ability and need.
