Management of anxiety related disorder in children with high functioning autism spectrum disorder using cognitive behavioural therapy

Abstract

To evaluate anxiety related disorders in children with High Functioning Autism spectrum disorder.

Effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy on anxiety in children with HFA.

A pre-test post-test single group design was used. The study was conducted with 30 children with High functioning autism spectrum disorder. Permission was taken from special school setting located in New Delhi.30 participants, fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected. They were asked to given a written consent for the participation in the study. General assessment of participants was carried out. Anxiety was measured by Hamiltion Anxiety Rating scale(HAM-A), Children Automatic Thought scale (CATS) and Spence children anxiety(SCAS). Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was given to those children with High functioning ASD.

The results indicate that CBT treatment condition produced significant change in variable-anxiety level. On analysis marked improvement was found in Pre and Post Intervention scores highlight immense reduction in anxiety level in children with ASD.

The study conclude that the cognitive behavioural therapy interventions are effective in reducing anxiety among children with High Functioning ASD along with the demonstration of parent education program.
