A Comparative Study on Mirror Therapy and Motor Imagery on Improving Gait in Post Stroke Subjects

Abstract

To compare the effects of Mirror therapy and Motor imagery and to determine which is the effective approach on improving gait performance in post-stroke subjects

A total of 71 subjects were taken, where 9 patients dose not met inclusion criteria. A total 62 patients were included with 31 in each into two groups GROUP-A (Mirror therapy), GROUP-B (Motor imagery). 57 subjects completed the intervention, Both the groups received 45 minutes of treatment which include 15+30minutes, where the GROUP-A, performs the exercises in front of the Mirror and conventional therapy GROUP-B which include the mental representation of movement without any body movement. These interventions are held for 6 weeks, 5 days a week for 45 minutes. the assessment was taken at baseline i.e. prior the intervention(pre-test) and at the end of protocol i.e. the post test measures were taken using gait parameters for gait function. 10meters walk test for walking velocity as the outcome measures.

Statistical analysis of the data revealed that in between the group comparison showed no significant difference, both the groups has shown improvement in gait in post stroke subjects.

This study concluded that there is no difference in Mirror Therapy and Motor Imagery improving gait in post stroke subjects, and they are equally effective.
