Age and Gender Related Differences in Push Up Test in Athletes of Belagavi-A Cross Sectional Study

Abstract

Endurance training is a type of exercise which helps to determine the physical capabilities of an athlete to perform any kind of sport. Standard push-up test is the most widely used and easy to perform, minimum equipment required, inexpensive and can be performed in a group of athletes at a time. Hence it is widely used to know the fitness level and endurance in athletes.

To know the endurance related to performance in the age groups of 18–29 years for Push Up test in athletic population of Belagavi. To know the gender based differences during Push Up test in athletic population of Belagavi.

Both male and female athletes between the age groups 18–29 years from various sports institutions of Belagavi, Karnataka were recruited in the study. A 5 minute warm up session was performed before the actual test. The athlete had to complete as many push-ups as possible in 1 minute and the maximum number of push-ups were recorded.

The comparison between males and females for the baseline data was done by t-test with the level of significance at p< 0.05. Most male athletes performed push-ups between 40–50 seconds.

This study concluded that the values of push-up test ranged between 10.00–102.00 for both genders and male athletes showed better performance than female athletes.
