Effect of Early Intervention with Spinal Isometric Exercises in Acute Lumbar Intervertabral Disc Prolapse

Abstract

Generally bed rest is recommended in acute phase of lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse. Deleterious effects of bed rest are reported in large numbers and these effects have negative impact on spinal function after disc lumbar disc prolpse.

The objective was to compare the effect early intervention with spinal isometric exercise with bed rest in acute lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of early intervention with spinal isometric exercise in acute lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse. A total of 60 subjects were randomly allocated into 2 groups (Group A and Group B). Group A (Control group) included only bed rest Group B (Interventional group) included hot moist pack, Interferential therapy and spinal isometric exercise.

Statistical analysis was done by paired t-test and unpaired t-test. During pre intervention, it showed no significant difference for VAS, lumbar range of motion, manual muscle testing and ODI, while during post intervention, it showed extremely significant difference for VAS, lumbar flexors(MMT), ODI, lumbar flexion(ROM) and lumbar extensors(MMT) and lumbar extension(ROM).

It is concluded that early intervention with spinal isometric exercise has significant effect on pain, improving spinal muscle strength and functional mobility of lumbar spine in acute lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse.
