Documentation of Electrotherapy Treatment in Clinical Practice-Is It Happening?

Abstract

Documentation is a very important component for the delivery of health care; it provides a continuity of care and serves as communication tool. It creates permanent record and facilitates record and research process. Documentation in Physiotherapy plays an important role as a professional requirement. A holistic patient care is best ensured through accurate documentation, which can facilitate information to all the health care team. Electrotherapy as a part of intervention must be well planned and executed which must be guided through evidence. An evidence based practice has to be widely practiced while incorporating the electrotherapy modalities. This will help in providing the best care with cost effectiveness and prevention of complications. Documentation in delivering the electrotherapy parameters is considered an important tool, which guides uniformity in treatment. Clinical decision making in the selection of modalities and to use best available evidence depends on the skill the practitioner which are guided by documentation. This observational study elaborates the importance of documentation with an aim to find out whether documentation is being done effectively while using electrotherapy modalities by physiotherapists in Mysuru. Seventy two participants were included in the study; they were evaluated about the documentation through questionnaire method. The results yielded that 17% documented, 47% had incomplete documentation, 36% did not document at all. This study concludes that documentation of electrotherapy treatment in clinical practice in Mysuru is poor (17%).
