Reproductive Hygiene should be looked at through a lifecycle approach as it affects both men and women from infancy to old age. According to UNFPA, Reproductive Hygiene at any age profoundly affects health later in life. The life cycle approach incorporates the challenges people face at different times in their lives such as family planning, services to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and early diagnosis and treatment of reproductive health illness. Reproductive Hygiene is defined as the state of physical, mental and social well being in all matters relating to the reproductive system, at all stages of life. It is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.
Reproductive Hygiene implies that people are able to have a responsible, satisfying and safer sex life and that they have the capability to reproduce and that they have the capability to reproduce and freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so. One interpretation of this implies that men and women ought to be informed of and to have access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of birth control.
