Management of Low Back Pain Through Ball and Balloon Activity in Peri-Menopausal Women: A Community Based Pilot Study

Abstract

Musculoskeletal complaints like Low Back Pain (LBP) are usually associated with faulty posture, suboptimal breathing pattern and trunk stability.

To study the effect of Ball and Balloon activity in the management of LBP in peri-menopausal women.

Prospective, experimental group control group, community based pilot study

Community

20 subjects were taken for study and allotted into experimental and control group (N=10 in each group). Age: Between 40–50 yrs.

Balloon blowing activity was performed by experimental group in supine position with the feet on a wall, hips and knee at 90–90 position and a ball between the knees. Activity was done four times and repeated for four times twice a day for 3 weeks. Control group was given ergonomic advice and precautions related to LBP.

Modified Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (MOLBPDQ), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Spirometry.

Statistical analysis showed significant improvement (p< 0.05) in MOLBPDQ (pretest mean 40.1, SD±1.13 and posttest mean 19.7, SD ±0.64) and VAS (pretest mean 8.6, SD±0.50 and posttest mean 4.9, SD±0.89) in experimental group. Spirometry scores were also improved.

Integrated co activation of deep abdominal muscles with pelvic floor, diaphragm and lumbo pelvic stabilization through Ball and Balloon Activity was found to be effective in managing LBA.
