Peri-Arthritis (PA) or Frozen shoulder is an idiopathic condition commonly being treated in physiotherapy department. A number of conventional free exercises are given as an addendum to the normal mobilization and electrotherapeutic treatment to PA shoulder. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) movement patterns of the upperlimb involve movement around the shoulder in a combined manner. This study was performed to check the efficacy of PNF movement patterns in improving Range of Motion (ROM) in subjects with Chronic PA shoulder.
40 subjects diagnosed with PA shoulder and referred to the Physiotherapy department were included in the study. They were divided into two groups – control group (n=20) treated by conventional free exercises and an experimental group (n=20) treated by PNF movement patterns. Both the group subjects were given mobilization and ultrasound as the main treatment procedures. The subjects were assessed on day 1 and after 3 weeks of treatment for ROM by using a Goniometer.
Results showed an increase of ROM in all the patients in both the groups but there was a significant (p<0.001) in External rotation range in subjects of experimental group.
This study demonstrated that PNF movement patterns when included in the normal routine of treatment of Chronic PA shoulder would increase ROM.
