Efficacy of modified constraint-induced movement therapy in children with spastic hemiparetic cerebral palsy

Abstract

Modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) implies restraint of the unaffected upper limb is applied and less than three hours per day of therapy is provided to the affected limb. This is used to improve function of hemiparetic upper extremity in cerebral palsy children; The specific objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of mCIMT in upper extremity function of children with spastic hemiparetic cerebral palsy. This study is a one group pre test post test design. 10 children with spastic hemiparetic cerebral palsy were selected and assigned in one group.

Pre-test value of Quality of Upper Extremity Skill Test(QUEST) and Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS) was measured on first day of the mCIMT program. mCIMT was given two hours a day, five sessions a week, for three weeks per children. At the end of the mCIMT program, post-test QUEST and MAS was measured.

Results shows that there is significant improvement in the functional capacity as the calculated “t” value 7.173 for the QUEST measure is in the table value at P=0.000

Results shows that there is significant improvement in the muscle tone as the calculated “t” value 3.096 for the MAS measure is in the table value at P=0.013
