Abstract

A randomized control trial, pretest-posttest control group design.

To determine the efficacy of local stabilizer strengthening in the treatment of chronic low back pain.

Summary of Background Data. A recent focus in the physiotherapy management of patients with back pain has been on the specific training of muscles surrounding the spine, considered to provide dynamic stability and fine control to the lumbar spine. In no study the researchers evaluated the efficacy of this intervention in the population of chronic low back pain.

Forty-five subjects with this condition were assigned to three groups with a 3 weeks intervention protocol. The first group received the local stabilizer strengthening, second group received the global stabilizer strengthening and the third group comprised of combined strengthening of the upper two groups.

After intervention, all the groups showed significant improvement in the pain scales, disability index and the ranges of movement of the lumbar spine. However, there was slower and delayed improvement in local stabilizer group as compared to the other two groups.
