Abstract

To investigate and to compare the effect of knee support brace and lateral wedge insole on isokinetic concentric peak torque of quadriceps and hamstrings muscle, pain and functional status in osteoarthritis (OA) of knee.

28 subjects with unilateral or bilateral medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee were randomly allocated into two groups, knee support brace group and lateral wedge insole group. The patients wore their respective orthosis 8 hours per day for 4 weeks. The outcomes were isokinetic concentric peak torque of quadriceps and hamstrings, pain and functional status (WOMAC), pre and post intervention.

Both the knee support brace and lateral wedge insole improved the isokinetic concentric peak torque of both quadriceps, hamstrings muscles, functional status and reduced pain.

Both the orthosis were found to be equally effective in improving the isokinetic concentric peak torque of quadriceps and hamstrings, reducing pain and functional status.
