Abstract

The objective was to study the effectiveness of Muscle energy technique and Positional release therapy in Acute Low Back Ache on pain and disability.

60 participants with acute low back pain were randomly assigned to Group A (HMP+MET) and Group B (HMP+PRT) during the study period of April 2008 to January 2009. The outcome measures were visual analogue scale (VAS), lumbar extension ROM by Schobers method, and disability level in terms of MODQ. Pre and post session intervention values of outcome measures were noted on 1st and 8th day of intervention.

The participants treated within groups showed a statistically significant decrease in pain, increase in amount of lumbar extension ROM, and decrease in disability level as per MODQ with p<0.0001, but there was no statistically significant difference when compared between groups in decreasing pain (p= 0.1611) increase in amount of lumbar extension ROM (p=0.4642), and decrease in disability level as per MODQ (P=0.3303) after 8 days of intervention.

Both MET and PRT along with HMP for acute low back pain showed improvement following 8 days of treatment as per significant decrease in pain (VAS), amount of lumbar extension ROM, and disability level as per MODQ and can be used as an effective treatment regime in participants with acute low back pain.
