To Measure Quality of Life following short term, out-patient based, aerobic training program in patients with chronic respiratory diseases using locally developed Questionnaire.
Hospital based, longitudinal study.
Patients referred from Respiratory Outpatient department.
Patients with Irreversible chronic pulmonary disease of more than 3 years duration diagnosed cases by the Medical specialists of >14 years of age, Clinically stable on optimal medical therapy and with no hospitalization or major surgery in the last 2 months.
Concomitant diseases leading to incapacitation or functional impairments.
Basic demographic data, disease and treatment details were recorded
A pre-validated questionnaire tailored to Indian situation was used to assess quality of life changes.
To a group of 6–8 patients supervised Aerobic exercises were given for a period of 6 weeks.
Changes in the scores of QOL questionnaire, six minute walked distance RPE on Modified Borg's Scale were recorded before and after aerobic training.
Thirty cases were enrolled in present study of them 20 were males, 10 were females. Six minute walk test distance improved from 366.33 meters to 443.33 meters p<0.001 and mean perceived exertion score improved from 5.55 to 2.8.p<0.001showing overall improvement in physical activities. Total Quality of life score improved from 43.8 to 63.5 p< 0.00.00 after aerobic training consistent with physical and symptomatic improvements. Similar improvements in mean scores were observed in sub domains also.
Locally developed HRQoL questionnaire was able to record the improvements in QoL scores after hospital based aerobic training rehabilitation program in patients with Chronic Pulmonary Diseases in Indian patients.
