The purpose of this study was to find the validity of MAI in predicting neuromotor outcome in Very Low Birth Weight Infants (VLBW) at one year of corrected age.
Infants(n=40) born with birth weightd”1500gms and admitted to NICU were assessed at 4 months of corrected age using MAI scale and follow up evaluation for motor and mental development was done with a neuropschycological tool, Bayley Scale of Infant Development (BSID II) at 12 months of corrected age.
The predicted neuromotor outcome at 12months on motor items of BSID were 70% sensitivity, 83.3% specificity, 58.3% positive predictive value and 89.3% negative predictive valve and for mental items were 60% sensitivity, 74.3% specificity, 25% positive predictive value and 92.8% negative predictive valve with a cutoff score of e”10 on MAI.
The MAI administered at 4 month is a useful clinical tool with high specificity and acceptable sensitivity in predicting neuromotor outcome at one year of corrected age in VLBW infants.
