Cancer patients experience osteopenia or osteoporosis resulting from accelerated loss of bone mineral density (BMD) caused by their treatment. Such bone loss greatly increases the risk for fracture and can have other serious effects on quality of life. Therapeutic ultrasound is a frequently used modality in the practice of physical therapy.
to investigate the effect of low intensity pulsed ultrasound on BMD of lumbar vertebrae and quality of life in post-mastectomy patients.
50 pre-menopausal post mastectomy women suffered from lumbar vertebrae osteopenia, received therapeutic ultrasound 3 times/week for eight weeks. Outcomes measures were Dexometery (DXA) as well as Quality of Life Question (QLQ-SF 36). Both were measured before and after intervention.
Showed a high significant increase (P < 0.0001) in BMD and an improvement in all performance aspects of life quality and symptom reduction
Therapeutic ultrasound is an effective modality to increase BMD for post mastectomy women to improve their quality of life.
