Abstract

To study the effect of cryotherapy on the functional ability of the throwing shoulder.

The throwing accuracy of shoulder joint was compared before and after application of a commercially available cryotherapy pack via a functional test known as Functional Throwing Performance Index (FTPI).

Data analysis using one way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) & Tukey's Multiple Comparison test showed that there was a statistically significant difference between Pre-Test and the post test throwing accuracy also a significant difference when compared to the throwing accuracy after 5min.

However there was no statistically significant difference between the pre-test throwing accuracy and the accuracy at 10 Min & 15 minutes respectively.

Throwing accuracy was decreased after a 20-minute cryotherapy application to the shoulder. Caution should be taken when returning an athlete to play after a cryotherapy treatment for atleast a period of 15 Min. after the cessation of application.
