Pre-submergence reserve carbohydrate was found sufficient to support the elongation of internode of deep-water rice. Internode elongation depends on current photosynthate when pre-submergence carbohydrate content of plants is highly depleted. Elongation phenomenon appeared to be anaerobic process. The amount of oxygen produced during current photosythesis was found sufficient to support the internode elongation. Translocation as well as utilization of photosynthate by elongating internode depends on the availability of dissolved oxygen in the water.
