Varietal Differences in Stomatal Diffusive Resistance and Transpiration Under Soil Moisture Stress in Sugarcane

Abstract

Stomatal diffusive resistance (SDR) and transpiration were studied in of ten sugarcane varieties under moisture stress. Moisture stress was imposed during the formative phase with two irrigations against five irrigations under normal condition. Results revealed that the varieties CoS 88225, CoS 767, CoS 88216, Co 1148, CoS 90265, CoS 90269 and CoS 88230 tended to conserve water during soil moisture stress phase showing greater SDR and lower transpiration rate, whereas at recovery phase (re-watering) Co 1148, CoS 767, CoS 88230 and CoS 90269 exhibited lower SDR and higher transpiration compared to their respective normal soil moisture condition.
