Induction of lipid peroxidation in germinating seedlings of Phaseolus vulgaris L. by various pollutants

Abstract

Effects of environmental pollutants, viz., Cadmium (CcF), Selenium (Se), herbicide glyphosate and pesticide dimethoate were studied on germinating seedlings of mung bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The level of lipid peroxidation (LPO) as indicated by malondialdehyde (MDA) formation was greater at day 6 treatment than at day 4 in Cd+2 and Se treatments at higher concentrations. However, opposite was the case in glyphosate and dimethoate treatments. Lower concentrations of glyphosate and dimethoate had little effect on LPO either at day 4 or day 6. The order of induction of LPO is Cd+2, dimethoate, glyphosate and least by Se.
