Salinity-induced changes on peroxidases in Nicotiana tabacum (Var. Jayasri) callus cultures

Abstract

The effect on peroxidase activity and its isozymic banding profile due to salt (NaCl) stress adaptation and short term salt - shock treatment were examined in Nicotiana tabacum L. (var. Jayasri) callus lines. Gradual increase of peroxidase activity with more salt stress impostion in culture media and a significant rise of the same due to short term salt shock were observed in tissues adapted to 171 mM NaCl. Though all the isoperoxidases responded differentially due to different degrees of NaCl stress, the expression of a specific band (numbering 4) appeared to be unique for considering it as a probable marker for salt stress in this system.
