Available carbohydrate fractions in stem bases and leaves of camel grass (Cymbopogon jwarancusa jones (schultz) in relation to ontogenetic development

Abstract

Cymbopogon jwarancusa Jones (Schultz) was grown in a trial with four replications to study the trends of available carbohydrates during its ontogenetic development. Samples of leaf and stem bases were harvested at 15-days intervals during the entire growing season and were analysed for different carbohydrate fractions. Camel grass was found to accumulate fructans, together with sucrose in stem bases. Carbohydrate pattern in leaves and stem bases over ontogenetic development of plant was found to be almost parallel, with difference only in the concentration of different sugars. The highest concentration of sugars occured at stage 1. Fructans and fructose showed an alternate increase and decrease in their concentration except that fructans increased towards fall.
