Development of Starch Granules in High Lysine Sorghum Grains

Abstract

Transmission electron microscopy showed delayed development of amyloplasts in P- 721 (high lysine mutant) compared to CSV-5 (normal) cultivar of sorghum. Free starch granules (4.5- 9.0 µ.) were observed in CSV-5 at 15d stage whereas in P-721 the starch granule development was still observed in the amyloplasts and only a few starch granules were seen free in the cytoplasm measuring not more than 4.5 µ. in size. The ultrastructural studies, therefore, indicated the delayed development of amyloplasts and small size of starch granules to be responsible for lower starch accumulation in P- 721 grains.
