Critical Sulphur Requirement in Plants and in Nutrient Medium for Yield of Indian Mustard (Brassica Juncea (L.) Czern & Coss)

Abstract

Deficiency, toxicity and optimum level of sulphur for Rai (Brassica juncea) (L) Czern & Coss) studied in sand culture, revealed that 128 ppm of sulphur in the growing media and 0.45 to 0.48 per cent of it, in the plant tissue was optimum for maximum seed production. However, imperical estimates made through regression equation suggested a value of 203.0 to 215.1 ppm sulphur in the growing medium is the tolerance limit, which may provide higher yield. Sulpur supply below 128 ppm in the growing medium 0.27 per cent in leaf tissue appeared to be critical, to cause yield reduction due to deficiency while above 0.63 per cent in leaf and 215 ppm in sand culture were toxic. Increasing the level of sulphur under deficiency conditions increased seed yield, number of siliquae on different branches and chlorophyll content of leaves.
