Isoenzyme Pattern of Respiratory Enzymes Associated with Ripening and Senescence of Litchi Fruits

Abstract

Changes in isoenzyme patterns of malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glucose-6phosphate dehydrogenase (G6 PDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were observed in aril (the edible part) of Litchi chinensis Sonn. cv. Kasba during fruit ripening. In contrast to LDH, isoenzymes of MDH and G 6 PDH exhibited greater activities at respiratory upsurge and their parallel trends reflect the concurrent operation of Kreb's cycle and pentose phosphate pathway. Kinetin treatment alters the isoenzyme profiles and intensifies G6PDH and LDH activities at the over-ripe stage whereas MDH is more intense at the partially senescent stage. Cycloheximide (CHI) application brings about enhancement of G 6 PDH and LDH isoenzymes but after initial inhibition of LDH by CHI. Lack of effect of CHI on MDH points to the retention of mitochondrial integrity even at advancing senescence.
