Effect of Nitrogen Fixing and Phosphorus Solubilising Bacteria on Nutrient Uptake and Yield of Wheat

Abstract

An experiment was conducted with different nitrogen fixing bacteria (Azospirillum hrasilense, Proteus vulgaris and Klebsiella planticola) and phosphorus solubilising bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) in wheat cv. HD 2428 under field condition. The inoculated plants showed larger leaf area, higher chlorophyll content, NR activity, total biomass production and grain yield as compared to uninoculated control. The grain and straw analysis revealed that the P content was considerably higher with Bacillus subtilis whereas N content was highest in plants inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense. The grain yield was higher as a result of more effective ears, grain number/ear and seed size in the inoculated plants over uninoculated control.
