Abstract

Pot experiment was conducted in medium black calcareous clayey soil to study the relative tolerance of five wheat varieties to different levels of salt concentration (0.78 to 15.4 ds/m) having chloride and sulphate salts. With the increase in salt concentration, there was decrease in dry mass at all the growth stages and grain yield. The reduction in yield was lower in Kharchia-65 and highest in J-405. Chloride dominant salinity reduced yield more than sulphate dominant salinity. The absorption of Na+ and Cl−1 was higher and increased with increase in salt concentration and more so with chloride dominant salinity as compared to K+ and SO4.
