Effect of Antitranspirants on Wheat Genotypes Under Moisture Stress

Abstract

Effect of two sprays of six antitranspirants (ABA, 5 and 10 ppm, Alar 200 ppm, CCC 1000 ppm, Simazine 50 ppm and Silicon 100 ppm) on the water potential, chlorophyll content, transpiration and productivity of a drought tolerant (K 78) and a susceptible (KML 7406) genotypes of wheat under moisture stress condition was studied in pots. Silicon (100 ppm) and ABA (10 ppm) produced significantly higher grain yield as compared to control. The antitranspirants were effective in order of Silicon > ABA 10 ppm > CCC > Simazine > ABA 5 ppm > Alar. Increase in grain yield of wheat genotypes appeared to be the result of increase in plant water status, chlorophyll content, biological yield and harvest index, coupled with reduced values of water potential and transpiration rate.
