Abstract

Tissue culture studies were made with two Jute species namely Corchorus capsularis L. (var JRC 212 and JRC 321) and C. olitorius L. (var JRO 524 and JRO 632) for their regenerating ability. Hypocotyl cotyledonary leaf/primary leaf, stem and root explants were used from 7 days to 60 days old asceptic seedlings. Among various treatment combinations, the medium containing 0.5 mg/1 BAP, 0.1 mg/1 NAA, 25 mg/1 tyrosine along with 15 mg/1 glutamine and 15mg/l arginine, was found suitable for induction of shoot bud proliferation in both varieties of C. capsularis. The differentiation was more in the hypocotyl than in other explants. The number of shoot buds varied from 3 to 35 in different explants. In constrast, the varieties of C. olitorius did not form any shoot buds.
