Nitrate reductase (NR) activity, soluble protein, chlorophyll content, leaf nitrogen and specific leaf weight were determined in thirty two Pusa selections of cotton including a standard check H 777 and a regional check Bikaneri narma to identify elite donors for these characters. The extent of variation was 3.5, 3.0,1.4, 1.8, 1.5, 1.5 and 1.4 fold for NR activity, soluble protein, chlorophyll ‘a’, ‘b’, total chlorophyll, SLW and leaf nitrogen content, respectively. It is envisaged that genotypes having best traits may be used as donor for respective traits for further improvement in cotton productivity.
