Much less quantities of labelled assimilate could be detected in bolls showing early symptoms of drying when sympodial leaves were treated with 14C sucrose. From the main stem leaf treated similarly the label was not detected in drying bolls. The maximum activity was recorded in acid hydrolysable fraction of these leaves. After setting in of the process of drying the radioactivity in the treated leaves diminished considerably indicating translocation of assimilates to active sinks on other nodes.
