Abstract

Gibberellin treatment stimulates respiration in Lactuca satim (Lettuce) seedlings and a peak is observed at 12 hours after transfer to GA solution, A correlation has been established with the effect of different concentrations of GA on the magnitude of this peak in oxygen uptake and the growth of lettuce seedlings at 72 hours. GA does not alter the R.Q. of the seedlings. The roots show no significant effect of GA while the cotyledons contribute to most of the respiratory activity. GA effets on fresh weight, protein content and respiratory rate are of varying magnitude and differ also in different parts of the seedlings.
