Some physiological and biochemical observations on hybrid necrosis in wheat

Abstract

Necrosis of leaves has been observed in the hybrids between two synthetic hexaploid (amphidiploids of T. dicocoides x Ae. equaorrosa) wheat varieties ABD No. 1 and ABD No, 9, and bread wheat variety Kalyansona. Experiments were raised to find out the physiological and biochemical basis of necrosis in these hybrids. External treatment with hormones partially improved the degenerating leaves of the hybrids with Indole-acetic-acid only, and this improvement was short lived. Glutamate and malic dehydrogenase patterns were almost identical in the hybrids and the parents. Peroxidase isozymes though similar, the enzyme activity was much higher in the hybrids than in the parents. Fraction 1 protein and glutamate dehydrogenase showed a higher intensity in the hybrids, which has been assumed to indicate a heterotic effect and a compensatory mechanism for the survival of the necrotic plants.
