Growth analysis parameters were used to understand the physiological basis for yield differences in some varieties of jute grown in Nilgunj, W. Bengal under varied nutrient supply from 1968 to 1971. Amongst the vareities of Gorchors olitorius L., JRO 632 and JRO 7835 outyielded JRO 620 and JRO 878. This was attributed to the earlier attainment of high CGR and LAI by JRO 632 and to the longer duration of maximum CGR and LAI by JRO 7835. The varities of C. capsularis L. did not differ amongst themselves in their fibre yield. NAR was not affected by fertilizer applications. Fertilizer applications increased yield by increasing CGR and LAI. The importance of evaluation of optimum LAI for jute is stressed.
