Time course experiment to determine the effect of imbibition on uptake and utilisation of glucose 14C suggested that the utilisation rate of glucose accelerated as imbibition progressed, though an appreciable amount was utilised during early hours of imbibition. The utilisation rate was dependent on crop years and thus with age but quite an appreciable amount was obtained in dormant seeds. Red light, though induced more incorporation than dark or white light, was unable to utilise glucose by very old seeds. Inhibition of utilisation of glucose by Far-red light took place in the viable stock.
