Abstract

The contents of keto acids and amino acids in the first compound leaf of normal and salinized plants of groundnut during progressive maturation of the leaf were determined by paper chromatography. The keto acids like oxaloacetic acid and phospho-enolpyruvic acid were found to be higher in the salinized plants. On the contrary, α-keto-glutaric acid, pyruvic acid and glyoxylic acid were present in higher amounts in the control plants. Marked increase in the concentration of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, alanine and proline was observed in the amino acid fraction in the salinized plants. The decrease in keto acids and increase in certain amino acids and their relevance has been discussed.
