Abstract

The inhibitors extracted from sub-tropical peach seeds were identified and found simliar to abscisic acid. On-dry weight basis both free and bound ABA like substance were about 1.5 times as high in the seed coat as in the endosperm. Both free ahd bound ABA like, substance were very high in dormant seed tissues. However, during stratification at low temperatures i.e. 10°C and 7°C these declined either to zero or non-measurable quantity. The decline trend of free and bound ABA like substance tended to parellel one another. Decline of ABA like inhibitor content was restricted to low temperature only. Although the changes in germination capacity was not dependant only on changes in inhibitor concentration similar to ABA, higher concentrations of this may be a causeof seed dormancy.
