Abstract

Twenty ive promising cultivars of mungbean (Vigna radiata (Roxb) Wilczek) from diverse origin were grown at Plant Breeding Experimental area, Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar during 1973 in a randomized block design with three repeats to find out which of the physiological measures at different stages of growth could effectively be utilised for selection of donor parents for breeding for high yield. The mean sum of squares due to genotypes for grain yield revealed significant variability and the range per plant was from 3.36g (Russian) to 17.84 g (H70-5). Varieties also exhibited considerable amount of genetic variation with respect to LAD and LAI. The magnitude of NAR and trend for RLGR appearedto decline as plant advanced to maturity. The four best varieties like H 70-5, H 72-3, Hyr-45 and K-11 maintained their superiority only because they had high LA©, LAI, NAR and RLGR at one or other phases of the growth.
