Effect of Saline-Alkaline Conditions on Nodulation in Pea (Pisum Sativum L.)

Abstract

Pea cv Bonneville was grown in sand culture subjected to a combination of 4 electrical conductivities viz. 3.5, 6.0, 12.0 and 18.0 mmhos/cm and 3 levels of pH viz. 7, 9 and 10. A icomplete failure of nodulation was observed at 10 pH with all the conductivities and also at 9 pH with 18 mmhos/cm. Marked reduction in nodulation was observed at 18 mmhos/cm with 7 pH and 12 mmhos/cm with; 9 pH. Salinity and alkalinity or both reduced number and weight of the nodules. The appearenee of leghaemoglobin in the nodules was delayed, the content reduced and an earlier and enhanced senescence (greening) of the nodules was brought about by increasing salinity and/or alkalinity.
