Abstract

Grain yields of 3 wheat cultivars, viz., Sonalika, Kalyansona and UP 301, grown under field conditions for 3 crop seasons (1969–72) were positively and significantly correlated with their dry matter content and nitrogen uptake at 7 sampling dates. Relationship between total dry matter produce and grain-N was also strong, The results point out that about 96, 93 and 82 percent of the variation in grain-N may be accounted for by the dry matter production in Sonalika, Kalyansona and UP 301, respectively. Breeding wheat varieties for high efficiency of channelising photosynthate and N assimilate to the developing grains has been suggested.
