Effect of rate and method of N application on dry matter production and N uptake at different growth stages of wheat (c.v. Sonalika) was studied under field conditions of the Experimental Block ‘A’ of the C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur.
N fertilization increased dry matter and N yields at all growth stages of wheat. Two peak periods of dry matter production and N uptake, one at late-tillering stage and the other at milk stage were noticed.
Maximum leaf and stem powth occurred at flowering and milk stages respectively. Maximum N accumulation in leaves took place at late-jointing stage in untreated or plants fertilized with full N dose at sowing. Nitrogen given in splits showed highest N uptake by leaves at flowering stage. Stems accumulated maximum N at flowering stage in general.
On an average, of the total dry matter produced about 20–22 per cent was recorded upto late-tillering stage, 55–60 per cent by flowering stage and 95–97 per cent by dough stage. Contrary to this, 51, 67 and 99 per cent of the total N uptake was obtained at these respective stages. All-basal treatments showed higher per cent translocation of N to the grain than split application of N.
