Field studies on pre-(accumulated) and post-flowering (current) photosynthetic (Po) contribution to grain yield were carried out. Increased duration, higher N application and greater dry matter accumulation at flowering had a tendency to decrease post-flowering photosynthetic contribution. Varieties differed in their post-flowering Po contribution even at the same level of dry matter production at flowering. Low light intensity influenced pre flowering Po quantum differently in Sona and RP 4–14. Some varieties exhibited flexible behaviour in shifting over from one system to the other when planted at different times. When moisture stress and other pest and disease pressures occur, accumulated reserves appear to play a significant role in controlling productivity.
