Studies were conducted on cowpea cv 1-S-68 in sand culture under different stress levels created by polyethylene glycol. Treatments with ascorbic acid (AA) were given through rooting medium and the proline content was estimated periodically. The proline content increased with the age of plant and also with increasing stress levels. AA treatments counteracted the effect of stress on the proline accumulation.
